The Big Purple Barn is always in need of new volunteers
What Volunteers Do
Providing attention and care for 15 equines, many of which possessing special needs, as well as pigs, goats, sheep, and cats every day, is a momentous task at the farm. That is why we developed a volunteer program. Through your participation in the program, we are able to meet the needs of our animals while offering meaningful, hands-on learning experiences.
Volunteers receive training in horse and animal care, stable management and basic veterinary/first aid skills. Many of our volunteers are able to fulfill community service requirements for their schools and several have gone on to get jobs in barn management.
Shifts typically take place in the morning or evening and include feeding, mucking, and tasks like blanketing, grooming, or bathing the animals. We maintain small, focused groups to ensure quality learning and safety, while giving volunteers exposure to different aspects of farm care.
No prior horse experience is required, and we welcome volunteers as young as 12 with supervision.

Working at the barn offers youth a positive, active outlet while building responsibility, compassion, and confidence. At The Big Purple Barn, we are proud to provide a supportive environment where both animals and people can thrive.
