Our sanctuary
The Big Purple Barn in Bowie, Maryland is a nonprofit animal sanctuary dedicated to providing lifelong, compassionate care for special needs horses, ponies, minis, and other farm animals including sheep, goats, and pigs.
Our animals not only find a permanent home here, but also help create meaningful opportunities for connection within our community. Through their presence, we invite visitors to engage, learn, and build relationships grounded in care and compassion.

Connecting With the Community
For over 20 years, our Bowie, MD location has been a place where people and animals come together. As a community-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit and Horse Discovery Center, we offer opportunities for individuals and families to engage through hands-on experiences, educational programs, events, and service initiatives.
